Back Up and Sync (E2E Encrypted)

The Storage panel is where you see how much space Wayland uses, where its data lives, how to back it up, and how to sync it across machines with end-to-end encryption.

Go to Settings -> Storage. It has cards for usage, directories, backup, and sync.

  • The usage card shows how much space Wayland’s data takes.
  • The directories card shows where that data lives on disk. This is useful when you want to back up the directories yourself or include them in an existing backup. See File and Directory Layout.

Use the backup card to create a backup of your Wayland data. Keep backups before a large change or on a regular cadence, so you can restore if something goes wrong.

Sync keeps your data consistent across machines, encrypted end to end so only your devices can read it.

  1. Open the sync card and start setup.
  2. Set a sync passphrase in the dialog. This passphrase is what encrypts your data. Wayland cannot recover it for you, so store it somewhere safe.
  3. Confirm to enable sync.

Use the same passphrase on each machine you want to join the sync.

The Storage panel also holds the reset action, which clears Wayland’s data. It asks you to type a confirmation first because it cannot be undone. Back up before you use it.
