Build a Standing Company
A Standing Company is a team of assistants that stays ready between sessions. You launch it once, give it a focus, and come back to the same group any time without rebuilding the roster. This tutorial takes you from an empty team slot through a real task run to a promoted Standing Company. You need a connected model provider before you start. See Connect Your First Model if you have not done that.
What you will build
Section titled “What you will build”A research Standing Company: a leader assistant that breaks down research goals, a researcher specialist that gathers material, and a writer specialist that turns that material into a draft. After this tutorial the team persists in your Teams library and is ready to use again without reconfiguration.
1. Open the Teams library
Section titled “1. Open the Teams library”Click Teams in the left sidebar. The library shows two sections:
- Standing Companies: teams that persist between sessions. This section is where your team will live after you promote it.
- Teams: ad-hoc launchers for single jobs.
Click Build my own team (top right of the library, or the card at the end of the Teams section). The launcher opens in an empty state.
2. Name the team
Section titled “2. Name the team”Give the team a name that describes its standing purpose, for example: “Research and Write”. This name will appear on the card in the library and in the active-teams area.
3. Pick a leader
Section titled “3. Pick a leader”Click Pick leader. The specialist browser opens. Select an assistant whose strengths match the coordinator role: a generalist with broad knowledge works well as a team leader. The leader is the member you address first. It breaks the goal down and directs the specialists.
4. Add specialists
Section titled “4. Add specialists”Click Add teammate twice and pick the specialists for this team:
- A Research specialist (or a generalist you will give a research role through the conversation).
- A Writer or Content specialist for drafting.
Each member gets its own model backend. You can assign a strong reasoning model to the leader and a faster model to the researchers if you want to balance quality and cost. Open the model selector on any row to change the assignment.
5. Set models
Section titled “5. Set models”Assign models to each role before you launch. The launcher shows a model selector per row. A capable reasoning model on the leader improves direction quality. Faster, cheaper models on the specialists keep the run efficient. You can change these later from the active team page.
6. Launch the team
Section titled “6. Launch the team”Click Create team. Wayland creates the team and navigates to the active team page. The leader card sits at the top. The specialists appear as tabs below.
7. Run a real task
Section titled “7. Run a real task”Give the leader a research goal. Be specific: vague goals produce vague direction. A good starting prompt:
Research the current state of AI coding assistants. Cover the main products, their pricing models, and what developers say about them. Then draft a 500-word summary aimed at a technical manager.
The leader reads the goal, plans the work, and begins directing the specialists. Watch the specialist tabs: the researcher tab will show the assistant pulling sources and notes, and the writer tab will show it receiving the material and drafting.
Team members ask before using tools that touch your system. Pending approvals surface on the team page. Approve file reads, web lookups, and draft saves as they come in.
8. Review the work in the activity log
Section titled “8. Review the work in the activity log”When the run settles, open the activity tab to see the full trace: which specialist did what step, the tool calls it made, and the results. Check that the researcher gathered usable sources and that the writer received them. If either step produced thin output, send a follow-up message to the relevant specialist directly from its tab.
When the draft satisfies you, the task is complete.
9. Promote to a Standing Company
Section titled “9. Promote to a Standing Company”Now that the team has proved useful, keep it.
- From the active team page, open the promote option. Wayland checks that the team is eligible.
- Confirm in the Promote to Standing dialog.
After promotion:
- The team persists between sessions instead of ending with the task.
- It gets an entry in the active-teams area in the sidebar for quick access.
- It appears as a Standing Company card at the top of the Teams library, separate from ad-hoc teams.
The leader, the specialists, and their model assignments all carry over exactly as you configured them.
10. Reuse the Standing Company
Section titled “10. Reuse the Standing Company”Close the team page and click Teams again. Your new Standing Company card appears at the top of the library. Click it to open the launcher, which shows the roster you built. You can adjust models or add members before each launch, or simply click Launch to start with the same configuration.
What you built
Section titled “What you built”You configured a three-member research team from scratch, ran a real goal end-to-end across leader and specialists, monitored approvals and reviewed the activity log, and promoted the team to a Standing Company. It is now a permanent fixture in your library, ready to run the same kind of work next time without any setup.
