Channels: IRC

IRC is a Tier 3 channel. Wayland joins an IRC network as a client. You give it the server, a nick, the channels to join, and optional SASL credentials for authenticated networks.

Before you start (prerequisites and accounts)

Section titled “Before you start (prerequisites and accounts)”
  • Access to an IRC network, and a registered account if the network requires SASL.
  • The Wayland desktop app running with a model provider connected.

Create the credentials (on the provider side)

Section titled “Create the credentials (on the provider side)”

Note the server host and port of the IRC network, and decide on a nick, username, and realname. If the network uses SASL, register an account and note the password.

Connect it in Wayland (Settings -> Channels -> IRC)

Section titled “Connect it in Wayland (Settings -> Channels -> IRC)”
  1. Open Settings -> Channels and choose IRC.
  2. Enter the Server and Port, and set TLS as the network requires.
  3. Enter the Nick, Username, and Realname.
  4. Enter the Channels to join.
  5. If the network requires it, enable SASL and enter the Password.
  6. Save.

Verify (status goes from idle to connected, send a test message)

Section titled “Verify (status goes from idle to connected, send a test message)”

After saving, the status moves from idle to connected. Send a message in a joined channel or a private message to the nick, then confirm a reply.

Set the assistant and default model on the IRC page. Inbound messages route to that assistant.

A wrong port or TLS setting, or missing SASL credentials on a network that requires them, are the common causes of failures. See Channel Connection Issues.
